Introduction to Reggio di Calabria
The big toe of Italy’s boot,
Reggio di Calabria
nearly touches Sicily, just 2 miles across the Messina Strait.
Although not nearly as famous as other
mezzogiorno
cities such as Naples,
Reggio is a fine example of the southern-Italian lifestyle:
strollers crowd the pedestrian section of
Corso Garibaldi
, Reggio’s main drag, for their evening
passeggiata
, window-shopping at the many designer outlets that dot the street, but take a walk there under the hot afternoon sun and you will think you’re in a ghost town.
Reggio is famous for its
lungomare
, a kilometer-long beach-front botanical garden that also makes for an ideal stroll, and is also home to the
Museo Nazionale
, which houses Greek treasures rescued (or plundered, depending on your outlook) from the neighboring Ionian Sea.
These are featured in the
Sezione Subacquea
.
Of particular interest are the
Bronzi di Riace
, a collection of bronze Greek sculptures portraying hot bearded warriors nude (those Greeks sure did love their hot bearded naked warriors!).
Reggio is also a good base to explore nearby
Scilla
, an attractive seaside town most famous for its
fata morgana
, an optical illusion that makes Messina across the water in Sicily seem to glitter above the sea.
