Introduction to Cinque Terre
Visiting Cinque Terre is like stepping into a delicious dream. One of Italy's most picturesque destinations, Cinque Terre, or "five earths" - a series of five colorful villages perched on a rocky, luscious coastline just northwest of Tuscany, joined by a beautiful hiking trail and a tiny passenger train - draws its visitors in and weaves a siren-like spell over them. You can't just hop in and hop out. The magic of these tiny Italian villages dotting the green bluffs is beyond compare: juicy lemons and olives and grapes ripening on the vine, romantic bed and breakfasts with seaside views, trails that lead through stone archways festooned in vines, tiny farms carving staircases into the hills like the rice terraces in Asia. The only drawback of such beauty is the summertime crowds. It's advisable to head over in the early autumn, as everything will be cheaper, less crowded, and less stiflingly hot.
The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre, from north to south are:
Monterosso al Mare
Vernazza
Corniglia
Manarola
Riomaggiore
