Introduction to Hiroshima
Hiroshima surprises.
You can tell it’s been the victim of the A-bomb – by the way it has come back with such intense zest and vigor, the celebration of life the city seems to make of the mere act of living – not just surviving but thriving.
Hiroshima has the energy and focus you’d expect of a near-death case 10 years on when he has completely changed his life, all in good ways.
There’s a passion to this city – no guilt, no victimhood, just pure love of living.
It’s invigorating.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t sad or poignant reminders of what was, everywhere.
You might be walking by one of the many rivers in town, and come across a statue of a mother holding a badly burnt baby, or a plaque dedicated to the 2
nd
grade class of some school which was cleaning up the outdoors when they got blasted by 2000 degree heat and the river dried up as they died with cries of ‘water’ on what used to be lips.
A car pulls up and an elderly woman gets out and lays a bouquet on the stone, says a silent memorial and prayer and gets back in her car.
No one will forget what happened here for a very long time, nor should they.
But instead of acting as a weight, it has spurred the city to make best use of its precious time.
The bomb has been treated as a learning experience – a painful one, but the best of humanity tends to come out during catastrophe, and Hiroshima has, instead of going for blame and woe, elected humility and a triumph of good will.
No one should go their life without visiting.
It is more than a city – walking down Harmony Boulevard or Concord Way, you realize this is not just a regular trip; it’s a pilgrimage for peace.
