Introduction to Hokkaido Edit Section - Hokkaido Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Japan retains its natural beauty, but not in wild abundance.  The outdoors, a commodity like everything else, have been quantified, ranked and curtailed, carefully controlled and manicured.  Hokkaido, Japan's northern most island, is a stark, untamed exception to this rule.  Famous for its brutal winters, Hokkaido is also the host to some of the country's best winter recreation.  A nature lover's dream, Hokkaido is a land of enormous natural parks, pristine glacial lakes, black bears and salmon chutes.  Hokkaido is the Alaska of Japan.  Come here to cool off in the summers, as the rest of the country bakes in a sauna steam bath, Hokkaido remains pleasantly cool, enjoying a relatively dry and warm, breezy season.  Extremely green, the forested mountains give an impression that not all of Japan is an aggressively modern, concreted urbanity.
