Introduction to Kanazawa Edit Section - Kanazawa Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Kanazawa is Kyoto without the crowds. Kyoto can have its protocols, Kanazawa has class. If Kyoto and Kanazawa were both in the Japanese National Sperring Bee (sic) than Kyoto would be the self-aware returning champion, the kid with all the pressure to perform and succeed, the lad to watch for on the late night television circuit. Kanazawa would be the other guy, the largely undiscovered underdog, the new crowd-favorite with all that talent and those endearingly interesting/ quirky facets. Kyoto is a Japanese city trying and succeeding at being iconic, Kanazawa doesn't need to compete with the larger scale and exposure of Kyoto, what it has is enough-authenticity. As such, Kanazawa is a largely undiscovered jewel on the central West coast of Japan. Like Kyoto, Kanazawa hosts ornate temples and an iconic castle, but it is calmer, smaller, less of a gaijin garden-party. A perennial favorite, Kanazawa's famous garden, Kenrokuen, is like Vivaldi's baroque gem, a wonder in all four seasons, a year round treat. Kanazawa isn't a replacement for Kyoto, it is a completion of Kyoto, come here before or after, enjoy it as an appetizer or aperitif, a city to tantalize or finalize a meal of manicured gardens and picture-perfect temples.
