Introduction to Nagano Edit Section - Nagano Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

World-class skiing and snowboarding, pristine alpine slopes, top-notch Japanese bath-houses, Nagano a is veritable winter wonderland.  The Olympic village (Nagano played host to the 1998 Winter Olympic Games) is nestled in the cradle of enormous peaks, rocky serrations that create the spine of Honshu.  The Japanese Alps tower above and around wood-panneled sake parlors and funky international restaurants.  The hills are largely above the tree-line, leaving skiers with unadulterated views of the distant valleys and rocky, ivory capped summits.  The entire family can enjoy the olympic offerings of Nagano,  as slopes range from extreme double-diamond mogul shoots, to gentle novice-friendly sloping grades.  After an intense day of downhill winter recreation nothing sounds better than a soak in a jacuzzi, fortunately Nagano offers something that both parallels and improves upon the bubbly plastic hot-tub.  Japanese Onsens (traditional bath-houses) ring the area, offering their gleaming bathing-facilities and large stone tubs, steaming with homeopathic blends of herbs and spices.  Tip-toe into geothermal pools of liquid heat and then cool off in glassy smooth cold baths, take a bench in the sauna and watch the aches of the day evaporate in the yawning steam.  Head outside and soak in the great outdoors, watch snowflakes pile up in the bows of trees, freezing piney limbs, while your own body remains comfortably warmed in the hot bath, while in the bath why not taste a cup of the local  Tateyama Sake and let Japan warm you inside and out.
