Introduction to Sendai
The Emerald City is either in the Pacific Northwest or Oz, while the Green city, Sendai, was founded a little earlier, around 1600. Sendai, Japan is 180 miles north of Tokyo, on Japan's Pacific coast. Nicknamed the 'city of trees,' Sendai was a city singularly defined by its arborphilia. Residents, shrines, and schools were all encouraged to plant personal trees, as a result the urbanity became relatively oxygenated by micro-forests. Unfortunately the infamous fire bombing of Tokyo wasn't the only casualty in northern Honshu, Sendai's thousands of trees proved ample kindling for a devastating city wide inferno, an enormous loss for dendrophiles everywhere. Today, festival fans can enjoy the Sendai Tanabata Matsuri, giant and ornate 'sasatake' are constructed and feted in front of the central JR station, bamboo and paper, these delicate and colorful floats are a Sendai specialty. Build up your appetite and then try a glass of Sendai sake, afterward the local delicacy, Gyu-tan, or cow tongue, is said to greatly increase your stamina. If standard fare is more your goal, stick with the consistently quality Sendai beef.
