Introduction to Takayama
If you don't have a flux capacitor or a DeLorean handy, this might be your best opportunity to experience a taste of ancient Japan. Takayama provides a glimpse into a Japan long faded from the realities of modernity. The preserved farming village of Hida, allows visitors to stroll around a bucolic lake, examining live, trained artisans practicing historical Japanese craftsmanship with period dress and tools. The artists practice their skills under thick, sloping thatched roofs, a mark of the village's authenticity. The village is a completely preserved window into a Japan unadulterated by Admiral Perry and his black ships of change. The nation-wide Takayama festival, held bi-annually in the spring and the fall, draws crowds from Honshu and beyond. The nearby Oku-Hida hot springs afford a steamy, body-melting respite from a day of drinking in history, afterwards dine on some top-quality Hida beef, enjoy slices of sukiyaki locally raised in the meadows of the Hida plateau. Spend an afternoon wandering around the local castle, Shiroyama, and then take a leisurely shopping stroll through the old town's traditional houses.
