Introduction to Masai Mara Edit Section - Masai Mara Travel Guide

The Masai warriors have long inhabited this fertile, stunning swath of land in southern Kenya.  Quiet ebony sentinels, swathed in crimson tribal garb, the Masai people are a beautiful and anachronistic feature of Kenya's most famous natural game park.  The Masai are traditional herdsman, nomadic wanderers who habitually establish partial villages between their favored grazing lanes.  The Talek and Mara rivers hydrate this gorgeous and hilly woodland, home to Kenya's biggest tourism draw: Wildlife.   The Big Five compose Kenya's most popular game including: leopards, lions, rhinoceroses, elephants, and the cape buffalo.  The animals are labeled the Big Five, not simply because they are all larger than a breadbasket, but because they are the five most dangerous animals one can hunt in Kenya.  All five animals, especially the buffalo are famous for turning in desperate and deadly rage towards a hunter who fails to kill but only wounds them during a hunt.

A standard Masai Mara safari should be sufficient for seeing most of the aforementioned animals, though by far, the leopard is the most elusive creature to spot.  While we are on the subject, the mercurial swiftness of the cheetah is occasionally on display, as the smallish and lithe cats stretch out into lightning quick bolts through the high golden grasslands.  Part National Reserve, part National Park, the Masai Mara is the one of the world's largest windows into the wild.  If you come to this "mottled' land (Mara means mottled in the local idiom) as a fan of zoos, you will leave unable to appreciate zoos and their caged claustrophobia.  True, you can see a lion in the Bronx, but if you want to understand what a lion is, head towards Kenya and let the northern plains of the Serengeti be your guide.

The Masai Mara Game Reserve is located at the heart of  Masailand.  Masai's are one of the 42 tribes to be found in Kenya.  It is located in the great Rift valley and is often referred to as "The Mara" . It can be spelt "Masai" and sometimes "Maasai" - both are correct.

It is a great tourist attraction with it's vast wildlife.  It is also famous for the world-renown spectacular wildbeest migration.  Other activities include game drives, balloon safaris, walking safaris and cultural safaris.  Masaai's are famous for upholding their culture including their diets, clothing and lifestlyes.

There are several camping and luxury lodges around the game reserve and is a place worth paying a visit.  Of all the wildlife safaris one can take while in Kenya, Masai Mara tops the list in terms of sceneries and wildlife.
