It has been said that a Western Tourist has the same chance of not getting robbed in Nairobi as someone donning a zebra skin and running through a pride of lions has of not getting eaten.  The city has a certain criminal reputation -- it is sometimes jokingly referred to as 'Nai-robbery' -- but while it is not the safest capital on the planet, it isn't necessarily quite so dire.  The city is the biggest urban populace in Eastern Africa and is a hectic, colorful hodgepodge of buildings, bazaars and people.  A few hundred feet higher than Denver, the city perches on a plateau.  It was established at such an altitude because malaria could not thrive at these high elevations and under cool conditions.  Hot days become surprisingly chilly nights, so bring a jumper even in the summertime.

The capital moved from Mombasa to Nairobi in 1905, and the British utilized the city as a base of operations for their big game hunts and safaris.  The city remains the central focus of Kenya's plentiful tourist industry.  Safaris of all ranges and price levels can be arranged at one of Nairobi's myriad agencies.  Before embarking on a tour of the animal kingdom, sink your teeth into some local game.  Carnivore, a famous restaurant, serves a variety of tantalizing and exotic meats of all spots and stripes.  Feast on impala, zebra, crocodile, and ostrich, or stay closer to home with pork, lamb, chicken, or steak.  Whether you eat wild or domesticated fare, the meat is prime, seasoned and flame-roasted on giant Masai swords.

Whereas the crime rate in Nairobi is quite high, the city is not a no-go zone.  Infact, after taking the neccesary precautions, one can walk around Nairobi with no bother at all.

If you are interested in Kenya Safaris, here are a few tips:
If you are white, don't stop to talk to strangers - don't ever!  Walk as if you really know where you are going.
Don't buy stuff from hawkers.  It is safer to enter a well established shop.  The hawkers will triple or hike the price especially when they see a white (mzungu)!
Don't wear any expensive jewellary. This includes watches.  Also, don't talk on your cellphone while on the streets.
Avoid walking late in the day/very early morning (from 6.30 pm to 7.00 am).
