Langkawi translates in Malay as 'eagle island' (eagle in Malay is burung helang), proving that eagles have talons full of vacation sense. Langkawi is truly a tropical flight of fancy. Langkawi Island is located in Kedah which has about population of ~50,000 residence. Most of those smiling locals cater to a growing tourist industry attracted to this Malaysian jewel of lush forests, golden beaches, clear dive sites, and mangrove swamps.

Just north of the Straits of Malaca, Langkawi basks in the Andaman sea, mere miles from the Thai/Malaysia border, making it an easy boat trip to Thailand and Phuket's beaches, or from Thailand, as an island welcome into the lapping Malaysian waters. Flights from KL arrive daily, as do boats to and from neighboring Thailand, making this pristine paradise an attractive hammock swaying destination, and only a short day trip away.

One of the wonderful activities here absolutely - shopping! This is due that Langkawi is a duty-free area, which mean lot of cheap items to be bought here. But with condition, visitors need to stay in Langkawi at least 48 hours before they can bring all the bought items to the mainland. This is to avoid item trafficking illegally. Langkawi actually consists 99 islands and five islands resurfaces during low tide. But only two of the islands were inhibited by men.

Getting to Langkawi Island
There are two ways to get to land of Langkawi - either by air or sea. If you choose to get there through sea, there is a ferry service to the island. The main take-off point to the island located at Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. While by air, there is a flight from Kuala Lumpur to airport at Langkawi. Flight services were provided by Air Asia as well as Malaysia Airlines (MAS).
