Introduction to Mali
Mali is a former French colony that gained independence in the early 1960's. It's pretty hard to get there so be prepared to spend some time if you get there. Don't even think of flying through Mali, it's quite a trek from Bamako to Timbucktu. But, bring a good book, a head scarf and your sense of adventure to tour around Mali.
The most incredible region of Mali is around the Mopti area. Dogon Country is home to the Dogon people and the scenery is straight out of National Geographic. Huge cliffs encompass a valley that is vaguely reminiscent of the Southwest United States. The best way to get to know Dogon Country is to spend a few days with a guide in Dogon Country and visit small villages, learn about the region's history and culture, and taste the exquisite cuisine.
From Mopti, don't miss the mosque in Djenne, the largest brick mud mosque in the world. From there you can make your way to Timbucktu and envision yourself in the salt trading days of Timbucktu. Don't forget to hop on a camel for a few days into the Sahara. But, it's a little hot, dry and sandy there.
Probably the biggest draw to Mali is the people. While they are not the friendliest in West Africa, spend some time getting to know Mali through the people. Most Malians speak French but you can occasionally find an English speaker. It's not easy to get around Mali but give it a shot. Your photo album will be incredible.
