Introduction to Mopti
Mopti is a large town along the River Niger that has served as a cross-roads and commercial center for centuries. The area surrounding Mopti is some of the most picturesque regions of the Sahel. The Sahara encroaches the river valley and makes for stunningly dramatic landscape.
The river is central to the town's identity and is seen as a lifeline to the otherwise isolated people of the Malian interior. A staircase leads from the market area down to the river where the boats unload their wares after long journeys from the surrounding regions. The town's inhabitants and visitors also use this area as a public bathing spot.
Due to its status of a market town, Mopti is always full of visitors. This gives it a seedy sort of feel but makes for delightful encounters with Touareg, Bambara, Fulani and Bobo. You may even get asked to become the wife of a camel herdsman, for the price of 500 camels. Be aware that there is only one bank where you can withdraw money with a bank card-- and if the satellite is down, so are you.
