Introduction to Valletta
The capital and largest city on the island of Malta has somewhat of a big city vibe. The streets are laid out on a grid pattern, which makes it easy to find your way around. Maltese streets are usually narrow, surrounded by buildings that often have small ornate balconies and colorful window shutters—very picturesque. The main shopping area is on Republic and Merchant Streets, both of them filled with mostly small shops that sell everything from fashion to souvenirs. As you walk around the city you can appreciate its many squares, gardens and great baroque architecture. St. Paul’s Cathedral is a lavish baroque church where you can get a break from the sun inside the dim light of candelabras. The amount of gold leaf is incredible. Make sure you wear something that covers your knees and shoulders, or else you will have to wear an old smelly blanket to cover up when entering the church. Also worth a visit is the Palace of Grand Masters, which now serves as the Governor’s residence
