Introduction to Mexico
Mexico is enormous (three-fourths the size of the U.S.), culturally and historically rich and diverse, and can boast some very gorgeous terrain -- from the golden beaches of its three coasts to the tangled jungles of Oaxaca to the dozens of rugged mountain ranges. Once home to many advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico also holds some of the world's most impressive archaeological treasures and city ruins, such as Aztec pyramids, Zapotec ramparts, or Mayan temples. People are generally very kind and generous, cities are colorful, and the food is delicious. Some beach towns like Cancun can be abrasive, overpriced tourist traps, but there are many, many beautiful towns and villages, particularly inland, that retain a particular kind of relaxed charm.
