This small town in the state of Puebla's foggy hilltops is a great place to walk up and down cobblestoned roads, past churches and small business, seemingly through the clouds that surround the city, stopping to sample yummy regional food at small local restaurants. Outside of town, tour guides will take you to ride horseback to visit canyons, waterfalls, and caves, but the main attraction in town is the weekly Sunday market. This outdoor market is one of the most fragrant and colorful around. On market day, nearby indigeous groups come to Cuetzalan, many dressed in their traditional clothes, to buy and trade. Stop and listen. You may hear some trading being done in Nahuatl. You may also observe the Voladores de Papantla performing their ritual in which men and women dressed like birds climb a high pole and come twirling down on ropes. You can see this every Saturday night at Los Jarritos restaurant and on the Zocalo.
