Introduction to Oaxaca
Oaxaca is an absolute must-see if your journey takes you anywhere near Mexico City or southern Mexico. Both a state within the country of Mexico and a colorful colonial town with enough mouth-watering street food vendors to keep you occupied all day, Oaxaca's got Mexico covered -- deep caverns, high peaks, ancient Zapotec and Mixtec ruins, waterfalls, natural springs, and spicy Oaxacan mole sauce to die for. In the city of Oaxaca, hammock-strewn hostels can be had for five or six US dollars and the narrow streets are crammed with a rainbow of tents full of indigenous jewelry and handicrafts. A mixture of Hispanic and native cultures yields many different architectures and archaeological sites, such as sixteenth-century cathedrals made of green quarry stone or the remnants eighteenth-century aqueducts. With its amazing restaurants, friendly residents, great nightlife and lively central square fills up with confetti and revelers on holidays, Oaxaca city is a great jumping-off point for the treasures surrounding it.
