Shopping is the local sport.  Bring your tennis shoes because you'll be walking up and down cobblestone streets and hitting up small local boutiques.  Many of these sell Mexican art-crafts and silver goods.  Most of these are pricey.  The best strategy, if you ask me, is to save on all the small souvenirs and splurge on a real quality piece to take home because there are some stores selling great paintings, antiques, furniture, and jewelry design.  Here are a few.

Consultoria Florencia Riestra en Arte y Antiguedades
Another great gallery in the Fabrica Aurora. This one manufactures fine furniture and also sells Mexican antiques. The owner, Alfonso, who is on hand on weekends, is also very knowlegable about art. He's happy to show visitors around and give them mini-classes in looking at the paintings and antiques.

C. Dewayne Youts The Store
This is the place for fine furniture and antiques. Not only is this a beautiful and spacious shop in the Fabrica Aurora, but the owner can also ship just about anything to the U.S. So, even a peak at the website is worthwhile.

Cerroblanco
At this store you can buy silver designs by brother and sister Pepe and Irma Cerroblanco, third generation silver designers. They've sold to international stores including Saks and Nordstrom. Their designs are a bit bigger and clunkier than what you'll find all around town, but the pieces are well-designed and well-crafted. Their prices are fair.

Darla
This little shop has more unique jewelry designs than those offered all around town -- thanks to Darla, a designer originally from Boston. They also offer really unique, fun clothes and handbags. Plus, the prices are extremely fair, but they will occasionally offer a discount so it's worthwhile to ask.

Fabrica de Aurora
The Fabrica de Aurora is a new and very fashionable shopping center for arts, antiques, decorations, and that sort of thing. It used to be a cotton factory and old machines are still part of the experience -- oxidizing It is one of the best shopping centers that San Miguel has to offer. Check it out before you spend too many pesos at the stores that line the downtown streets -- because here,...
