Introduction to Morocco
Moroccans gets a rough reputation on the streets of Spain (maybe it was that whole reconquest thing) as well as those of France (Battle of Tours) and the Netherlands (Theo Van Gogh.) Ironic, given the classic rendering of the 1942 film 'Casablanca' set in the unspoiled, unoccupied Morocco, and the iconic quote "we'll always have Paris." True, maybe for Bogart and Bergman, but with growing geopolitical unrest, will Paris always have Morocco? Tourists on the other hand are having less trouble taking a liking to Morocco's charms. Even though, debatably, Morocco is the the world headquarters of hashish production, heavy handed carpet salesman and lightning quick pickpockets. But you see 'my friend' Morocco is also the exotic host to spicy cities like Marrakesh and Tangiers. To endless stretches of silky dunes, camel rides and hand-crafted artistry in the bombastic bazaars. Morocco is awash in sun and sales. An affordable destination, with picturesque playas and picante gastronomy, isn't it time you feted in Fez and got comfortable with cous-cous?
With a land area slightly larger than California, and a per capita GDP at around 4500 dollars a year, Morocco is both richer than Bolivia and much poorer than Spain. Not a surprising fact, but interesting to note in the dynamic web of connectivity between these nations. The growing hordes of tourists are beginning to reshape the traditional and somewhat nomadic constellations of the former Berber hierarchy. A travel infrastructure is developing, as are opportunistic salesman and 'guides,' both willing and able to take you and your money-belt for a field trip around town, and send you home, hopefully with an ornate if pricey Moroccan rug.
