There are few cities in the world which can rival Amsterdam's beauty: its inner ring-shaped streets are lined with stunningly preserved 18th century mansions and paved in brick and smooth  cobblestone.  Bells ring on over 600,000 bicycles, which are ridden with death-defying skill by Amsterdammers of all ages, often with a second passenger seated side-saddle on the back.  Petals shimmer on the city's over 600,000 springtime daffodils and tulips.  More than 2500 houseboats are moored along Amsterdam's 165+ canals, making for a bustling, harbor-like atmosphere anyplace you go.  The 738,763 (as of July 2004) inhabitants of the inner city, hailing from 173 foreign countries as well as the Netherlands itself, are equipped with strong senses of humor and even stronger common sense.  After all, life in one of the most densely populated cities on earth doesn't allow for many missteps.  Still, Amsterdammers generously open their city to over 15,854,000 day-visitors each year.  It's a good thing this "Venice of the North" comes equipped with 500 years of masterful painting, so many charming parks and quiet courtyards, so many delicious beers and rich cheeses, and so many, many sparkling nighttime canals.

If you are going to Amsterdam you have to check out the film fest. I am traveling there with Talk Cinema next month for the Amsterdam International Documentary Festival. The trip is from November 20-25. If anyone is interested in joining us, they are such wonderful people to travel with, you can get some info at their website.
