Petals shimmer on the city's over 600,000 springtime daffodils and tulips. More than 2500 houseboats are moored along Amsterdam's 165+ canals, making for a bustling, harbor-like atmosphere anyplace you go. The 738,763 (as of July 2004) inhabitants of the inner city, hailing from 173 foreign countries as well as the Netherlands itself, are equipped with strong senses of humor and even stronger common sense. After all, life in one of the most densely populated cities on earth doesn't allow for many missteps. Still, Amsterdammers generously open their city to over 15,854,000 day-visitors each year. It's a good thing this "Venice of the North" comes equipped with 500 years of masterful painting, so many charming parks and quiet courtyards, so many delicious beers and rich cheeses, and so many, many sparkling nighttime canals.
