The Dutch are famous for making money, not dinner, but visitors will be astonished by the atmosphere of Amsterdam’s restaurants (even if the food is a little standard).  It’s that architecture doing its thing again!  French, Italian, Asian, and Mexican cuisines are in evidence; tapas are a surprisingly big deal, too.  The Jordaan is the best place to find good, inexpensive food; with its mix of ethnicities and classes, there are new places springing up all the time.  The Zeedijk in the Red Light District is the place to go for Chinese food.

Barney's Cafe and Coffeeshop
Barney's Cafe and Coffeeshop (which are two separate entities, but practically next door from one another) has good breakfasty foods, and good weed, but mainly a very cool atmosphere. It doesn't reek of the bar-ish scene that prevails in other coffee shops.

Akbar
Akbar is an Indian restaurant located at Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 15, off Leidseplein. Without a doubt, some of the best Indian food we have ever had. Owner Sappaul and his son, Sanje are wonderful hosts and make everyone feel at home.

Raden Mas
Don't miss this delightful Indonesian restarant, not far from Vondelpark. The food is delicious, the interior is beautiful, and the service is excellent.

Sea Palace
If you are near Central Station and see a Chinese temple floating in the water, you should follow the path in and enjoy some delicious Hong Kong cuisine. It has a great view of Amsterdam and a relaxed dining area.

Dorrius
If you're looking for traditional Dutch food, this old fashioned restaurant is worth the visit.

Rose's Cantina
Rose's is a great place to find Mexican food in Amsterdam. The atmosphere is great, the food is good and the drinks are wonderful. This place gets crowded so be sure to make a reservation or come early!

Kantijl & De Tijger
Drop in if you're near Spui and want some Indonesian food. This moderately-priced restaurant is pretty casual, almost pub style. Popular among tourists.
