Leiden Travel Guide

Leiden is a classically Dutch town, crisscrossed by tiny canals and cobbled paths, squished-together buildings and rows upon rows of bicycles. Leiden University, the oldest university in the Netherlands, was founded in 1575 and therefore has a ton of Old-World grandeur, with impressive libraries, ancient and imposing buildings (one of which was once a 13th century fortress), and a prestigious international reputation. A crumbling castle, De Burcht, sits atop a grassy hill, with a fairy tale-esque view of the regal cathedrals and pointed roofs that make up the little gray town below. Friendly farmer's markets roll out dried herring and enormous wheels of Gouda cheese, and warmly lit pubs cram with laughing college students and skeins of beer any night of the week.
