Though the city was razed on May 14, 1940, by German bombing, it is now the largest port in the world.  Amongst a lot of super-modern, and possibly experimental, architecture, find two great museums -- the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the Netherlands Architecture Institute.  Rotterdam is only 20 minutes away from Amsterdam by train.
