For Amsterdam-weary travelers, Utrecht can be an interesting stop: still full of young people, canals, "coffee shops," museums, churches, and great eats, but without the hordes of foreigners and sex shops so characteristic of Amsterdam. This centrally located, well-connected Dutch town boasts the Netherlands' tallest church tower (known as the Dom Tower, built in the fourteenth century and standing a good 112 meters tall), a large indoor shopping center called Hoog Catharijne, Utrecht University (the largest university in the Netherlands, established in 1636 and nowadays hosting near thirty thousand students), theaters, cinemas, great architecture, and terrace cafes. The museums, too, are not only high-quality, but unusual, including an Aboriginal Art Museum and a museum exhibiting many kinds of unique mechanical instruments.
