Introduction to Auckland
If you fly to New Zealand on an international flight, you'll likely fly into Auckland, the nation's biggest city (at 1.3 million, Auckland comprises one third of New Zealand's entire population). Though tucked into that far corner of the south Pacific, Auckland is bustling, up-and-coming, and quite beautiful: a coastal town strewn across blue harbors and forested hills, full of a clean, green set of nice restaurants, cafes, bars, and a tremendous amount of boats. The cityscape is dominated by the Sky Tower, over 1,000 feet tall, and allows its visitors to enjoy a lovely 360-degree view from its floor-to-ceiling windows while they dine on salmon and champagne. Auckland's got a zoo, museums, art galleries, a butterfly house, cosmopolitan nightlife, and much more. Most notable, however, is Auckland's proximity to so much of what makes New Zealand so enchanting, such as windswept beaches, tiny islands, rainforest hikes, and the craters of extinct volcanoes.
