Introduction to Milford Sound Edit Section - Milford Sound Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Milford Sound is a sparkling water-meets-land gem among the fjordlands of New Zealand's South Island. Giant green fjords, carved by glaciers and cascading with waterfalls, jut out of the deep blue ocean and take the breath away of all who ride shipboard among them. You can travel to Milford Sound by the Milford Road, New Zealand's remotest highway, and take either a daytime or an overnight cruise - complete with seafood buffets, picnic lunches, and even a peek into an underwater observatory, depending on the package you choose. If you've a bit more time and a lot more pep in you, hike the miraculous Milford Track to Milford Sound. Beginning at the tip of Lake Te Anau, trekkers may choose either a guided or unguided hike along jungly, moss-hung trails, shadowed by snow-capped mountains. The guided trip in its entirety lasts five days and is the ultimate in backpacking luxury - rather than lugging a pack weighted with tents, sleeping bags, and camping stoves, you hike from hut to hut, complete with hot meals and warm beds each night.
