Introduction to Punakaiki
Punakaiki is small, charming town that extends several kilometers along the coast of New Zealand's South Island. It mainly caters to the tour buses and coach services that stop for half an hour to allow their passengers to stroll along the famous and mysterious Pancake Rocks, although an overnight stay in the hamlet comes recommended. With hiking, caves, and ocean break a stone's throw away, Punakaiki's accomodation is surprisingly affordable, quaint, and very quiet.

A quiet, yet relaxing town centered around the Paparoa National Park. Lacking a grocery store and an ATM, Punakaiki is not a town one visits for its services or its nightlife. Rather, Punakaiki is a great place to stay to experience the quieter side of New Zealand's national parks, without sacrificing natural beauty. If anything, stop and see the Pancake Rocks, but I recommend exploring the town and its surroundings further. I definitely advise staying in Punakaiki over Greymouth -- not only is it more beautiful, its definitely a better value.
