| The highlight of Punakaiki is undoubtably its Pancake Rocks, cliffs of limestone rocks that have formed into what looks like stacks of thin pancakes as a result of a weathering process known as stylobedding. At high tide, water squirts up through the Pancake Rocks in geyser-like blowholes.
Punakaiki is also on the doorstop of the beautiful and rugged Paparoa National Park, which features sea cliffs, mountains, diverse vegetation, and the world's only nesting area of the rare Westland black petrel sea bird.
