Introduction to Agadez Edit Section - Agadez Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Agadez is a desert town at the edge of the Sahara. It is the last stop for asphalt roads: north of here is nothing but endless dunes of sand. It is a market town for desert dwellers who arrive here to experience "city life." It is the destination for thousands of tourists who arrive here by airplane to gawk at the romantic mystery of the Sahel. This makes for an interesting clash of cultures. It also makes for interesting things to do.

You will find surprising things in Agadez. For example, salad is especially popular and is sold not only in the expensive tourist restaurants but also as street food (who would have thought that salad was so popular in a place so inhospitable to it?) Nightclubs blare incredibly loud music in the evenings. Local bands of musicians play their variety of rock music for young people in crowded venues where it is popular to break beer bottles. You may be able to catch a poker game from Vegas on a satellite TV. Agadez is fun to explore!

Agadez is a strong hold for the Touareg, desert nomads known for their silver, armed uprisings and carjackings. It is interesting that they are so numerous in Agadez since it isn't a part of their culture to dwell in cities... but as our guide explained to us, they have been forced to urbanize to keep a stronghold on the tourist industry and to establish a voice in the national government. A small piece of advise dealing with Touareg: bargain with them over tea, unhurriedly. And don't feel intimidated by the guy trying to sell you daggers in the dark alley.
