Introduction to Niamey Edit Section - Niamey Travel Guide

Niamey is the capital of Niger. The city rests quietly on the banks of the River Niger. The light on the river has a supernatural quality. It is unbearably hot during the day, but the evenings are pleasant. You would not know all of this if you had listened only to the international news media reports: lately, all you hear is news of wide-spread famine. “The most wretched place on earth” was just one of the descriptions that catapulted Niger into the Western audience’s collective consciousness. You may come to Niamey haunted with images of starving children and dying crops, but nothing could prepare you for what you will actually encounter here.

In Niamey, there are beggar children dancing happily at intersections, beckoning passersby to join into their chants and tin can drumming. At the central market, the eyes of the Nigerians are kind and passionate and intensely penetrating. For dinner, you will eat an incredible plate of couscous with eight types of leaves, spices, magic and oils that is mixed with the vendors hand. There is something intense about the desert. But the intensity isn’t daunting, it is intimate and captivating.
