Introduction to Kano
Kano is everything you should expect from an African industrial city: loud, chaotic and polluted. Despite its immediate appearance as a concrete jungle, Kano also has many charming qualities.
A favorite is the moped taxi system, a fleet of seemingly millions. Wherever you may want to go in Kano (to the dye pits, the labyrinths of the market districts or the central mosque), skilled and macho moped drivers will take you there with anonymity. If you get lost or feel unsafe, just flag one of the drivers down... they will sweep you away. Remember to wear a gas mask or a less conspicuous scarf around your face during the ride. As you wait at the traffic lights for the green, the exhaust from hundreds of other mopeds around you is intolerable.
Kano is the leading commercial center of northern Nigeria. You will be staggered at the sheer quantity of banks (literally, thousands of them like Diamond Bank, Habib Nigeria Bank, Ivory Merchant Bank, Magnum Trust Bank). I wouldn't vouch for quality- your visa is not accepted anywhere (mastercard at select banks). It is a relatively safe place, perhaps because of sharia law which tolerates petty crimes on a the same scale as it does larger crimes: not at all. Don't worry though, you can still find a cold beer in the center or in the expatriate spots around Bompai Road.
