Introduction to Norway
Norway - You Can't Afjord Not to Go! Maybe this isn't the official slogan of this northern Nordic nation.. but it should be. An increasingly popular travel destination, Norway is finally emerging from Sweden's icy shadow. Sweden, having kidnapped the Scandinavian spotlight for years, has a new equal. Norway is shaking off the last vestiges of Stockholm syndrome and is self-assuredly sounding its "barbaric yawps over the rooftops of the world." Traditionally, Norway and Sweden have a relationship akin to Canada and America, or New Zealand and Australia. The former bristling with a bit of the insecurities that a junior partner, or a little brother might harbor towards his showy older brother. Today, Norway and Sweden have a friendly viking rivalry, a congenial contest to see who can wear more pairs of androgynous "Skinny Jeans," or be more blond. Norway's resentment towards Sweden is not completely unfounded, the Swedes having dominated Norway and maintained a snowy suzerainty over their neighbor several times throughout their shared history.
This NATO state, with a population of just over 4 million people and a land slightly larger than New Mexico, is a growingly popular travel destination. The Fjords (aka firths or inlets) are, perhaps, the nation's biggest tourist attraction. Formed through glacial processes, the fjords are long narrow waterways, caused by the inundation of u-shaped glacial valleys. The steep sides and flat bottoms allow enormous access to deep drafted sea-vessels, making these natural waterways the uber-canals of northern Europe. The fjords slice through Norway's breathtaking nature, granting a perfect perspective of Norway's mountainous, stoic topography.
