A beautiful university town, Norway's second biggest city bills itself as: "A city with its feet in the sea, its head in the skies and its heart in the right place." Not only is that a catchy slogan, but an accurate description of this delightful Norwegian jewel. Before blasting off on a fjord safari, check out stunning Bergen, a former Hanseatic port (see Gottingen). The city has a long and colorful history, reflected both in its traditional wooden houses and vibrant stone streets. Dive into the city's seafaring history at the Maritime Museum, the Fishery Museum, the Coastal museum and the local aquarium. If that's not enough culture, grab some peanut butter and head to the "World's Biggest Gingerbread City." This holiday treat is made by local kindergartens and elementary schools who build a miniature Bergen and combine their efforts into a crunchy cinnamon civilization at the Galleriet shopping center. After all of that wholesome history, hit the university scene and get very involved in Bergen's youthful nightlife. The University of Bergen hosts some 16,000 students, offering visitors a variety of viking venues, sleek cocktail bars, cozy pubs, and all flavor of restaurants. The small 244,000 person population of Bergen does not delimit the amazing amount of activity in this under-appreciated European treasure. Bundle up, book your tickets, grab your oar, and make your way to Bergen, the "Gateway to the Fjords." You'll be glad you did; it's a bit pricey but, in the grand scheme of things, it's a real Bergen.
