| Boquete is probably the second-most visited tourist destination in all of Panama, and is rapidly becoming a hot investment commodity for enterprising Britsh and American expatriots looking to retire in a cheap and comfortable tropical paradise. You can tell why, since the town, nestled as it is in the green hills of western Panama and boasting some of the highest elevation in the country (Volcan Baru, Panama's highest point, is a fifteen minute taxi ride away), is much cooler and drier than most other regions. This is not to say that it is cool and dry by any means, but long sleeves are often necessary at night, and walking around in the sunshine is amazingly pleasant, since the humidity isn't nearly so suffocating. It's cool enough to grow fresh vegetables here (the majority of Panama's vegetables come from Boquete), and the town, catering more and more to its influx of foreign visitors, feels almost European: Little cafes offer Snapples and Greek sandwiches, restaurants have creamy pasta dishes, pizza, omelettes, and waffles, and upscale bars feature ethnic motifs and frothy cocktails. English speakers make up at least half of the population, and despite its popularity, the hostels are very tasteful, comfortable, and cheap ($7 per person). But the best part, perhaps, is the town's proximity to beautiful hikes through forested hills, rivers, waterfalls, and hot springs.
