| In the European rally race to be the next hot travel city, Warsaw's got Pole position. Warsaw (Warszawa in Polski) , like Madrid, is a national capital located in the center of the country, only the Polish version has decidedly less 'La Mancha' and a lot more ski. (It's like Aspen Extreme, but more Slavic) The Warsawski flagski, like the Spanishski banderaski, is red and yellow, but the Polish version lacks the Espanish, e-sigil. Poland's largest city is home to around 1.7 million Poles, 3 million plus in the conglomerate metro area. Warsaw is a capital rich in people, food, drink, and history.
Remember in junior high school World History class, how eventually one student always asked, "but why didn't the holocaust prisoners ever fight back, there were so many of them, why didn't they band together and resist?" Well in Warsaw, they did, the Warsaw ghetto was formed after the SS Wehrmacht invaded Poland and seized control of the capital. Cordoned off into a large, unruly ghetto, the citizens were slowly starved, robbed and murdered, until April 19th 1943 when a tenacious, and brave core, fought the Nazi oppressors for a month before finally being squelched beneath the superior fire power of the German war machine. For more on the Warsaw Uprising, check out the Academy Award winning film, The Pianist, or, if you prefer Ross from Friends and Lee lee Sobieski (that ski comment was no joke) rent Uprising, a 2001 David Schwimmer TV movie.
That bravery didn't go unnoticed by the Germans, figures list that some 85% of Warsaw's buildings were destroyed in the carnage of WWII, today however, the city is beautifully revitalized. Awash in history, the city boasts an amazing Stare Miasto (Old Town) resplendent with tastes and views of the 'old world.' With so much poignant culture, the museums are naturally excellent, spend some time in the Wilanow Museum Palace and the Jewish Cemetery (Cmentarz Zydowski). The Palace of Culture and the Royal Castle are also interesting historical caches. Hotels range from the luxurious to the backpacker friendly, for a taste of home in the middle, look up the local Holiday Inn Warsaw, you might even get a mint. Warsaw is being touted as the 'new Prague,' so get in while the getting's good, it's literally -pact- with things to do.
