| Lagos lounges on the beaches of the Algarves on the southern coasts of Portugal. Perhaps the most popular of Portugal's cities, Lagos has established itself as a go-to destination of playa seeking backpackers on their Iberian loop into the peninsula. Almost all of the city's 28,000 inhabitants live and work in the service and tourism industry, making the town distinctly oriented towards the needs, wants and wishes of the passport packing mobile bank accounts. Nightlife is plentiful, the city reclines in the bowl of a hill climbing to an impressive view over the azure waters and twinkling bars, clubs, pubs, late night taparias, and loungy gourmet caverns. In Lagos, an international smorgasbord of flavors awaits. Take a day cruise on a sailboat, savor the freshly deck-barbecued fish, cool off in the clear waters, and ride on short boats into the beckoning caves and rock formations lining the beach.
Historically no slouch, Lagos was a settled by the wiley Phoenicians on their meandering sneak attack on Rome. The Romans expected attack from the south, a naval launch (from modern-day Tunisia) that would bring the Carthaginians to their high heeled shores. Hannibal, the brilliant general and strategist of the Carthaginians, knew that such a tactic would neither win him the war nor land him firmly in the pages of any Prentice Hall A.P history books, so with the cunning of Odyseeus, and the patience of Patton, he loaded up his war elephants and set off through Iberia.
He stopped briefly in Lagos to recruit some Celtic warriors to fight as mercenaries against the Romans. Following the maxim, "nothing under the sun is more terrifying than a Carthaginian on a war elephant" Hannibal made the unprecedented decision to cross the Alps and attack from the north, a move that Mediterranean-looking Rome, literally, never saw coming. |
