| Lisbon is like Madrid only prettier, with a beach, and a lot more flare. Fear not, for this isn't the annoyingly saccharine and cloying 'Office Space' kind of flare, but rather the sassy,"I chose to wear this cape" kinda flare. A firework blast of color, sites, sounds and attractions this provincial little capital has transformed itself into a monarch butterfly, flapping its dusty little wings all over both the monarchy and their canary yellow city. The Euro cup 2004 energized Lisbon, and the city gave itself a good once over, emerging from the Apalachian backwaters of Spain to the front line of a: hip nightlife, decadent cuisine, and urbane city full of theatre and luxury hotels. Museums, cathedrals, galleries and a palace make this bustling, freshly painted city a place to eat, drink, and ponder color theory. Dwarf yourself next to the magnificent mosaics, blue lattice worked details darting along the walls. Get lost counting the myriad marble statues and monuments. Witness the metamorphic stone gleaming in polished white. See the many ivory testaments to Portugal's national achievements and innovations. In Lisbon you will note the Portuguese pride crafted delicately and chiseled carefully into the bedrock of the city, it is this foundational identity in particular that affords Lisbon such a welcoming, comfortable ambiance. |

However, it is increasingly marketing itself to tourists and all the consequences that come with this are visible around the Baixa (downtown). The food is delicious, there is culture everywhere, the architecture is simple but "beautifully simple". And the nightlife is, maybe, one of the best in Europe. The Bairro Alto is amazing - you have bars for everyone: Fado houses, Jazz bars, student bars, metal bars, 80s bars, lounge bars, etc etc etc. If you are interested in this more "alternative" look at Lisbon, check this site's listings and reviews of bars, restaurants and nightclubs in Lisbon . They offer listings of bars that aren't available in your regular Lonely Planet or Time Out guides to Lisbon - very interesting!

deimosaffair submitted a review on 2008-09-30 09:23... i' ve been in lisbon the past week, and the place is great. still feels like an old city, and specially alfama looks like a medieval town. i stayed at a small and very friendly place, the lazy crow, right in the middle of the old district. it was some of the best 3 days of my whole vacation... i also got the best tips from the staff, so i avoided the usual tourist traps and went stright for the good stuff. i even ended up with the staff and some more guests at a local bar definitively not for tourists... great time....
