| Bucharest is divided into 6 sectors. Similar to Paris, it is organized around piatas or "squares", which are open spaces creating a neighborhood center. Of interest to most visitors, Sector 1 includes Piata Victoriei, Piata Unirii, Piata Romana, and Piata Universitate, which are often considered "the center". It includes several international hotels as well as numerous restaurants, bars, and clubs.
Piata Unirii includes a popular shopping mall, and on the other side lies the House of the People, the second largest building in the world after the US Pentagon. This massive project was started by former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
From Piata Unirii, you can walk north to Universitate which stands between several major universities.
