Senegal is a former French colony that gained independence in the early 1960's. Senegal has maintained strong ties to France and it shows in the infrastructure, relative to its French-speaking neighbors. Senegal boasts an incredible coastline with a blend of vibrant music and delicious food. One of Senegal's legacy lies in the ties to the slave trade. Just pick up a copy of Alex Haley's "Roots" for a history lesson on the region, as it takes place in Senegal's neighbor, the Gambia.

Dakar is a fascinating city on the water with one of the best music scenes in West Africa. If you like African music, you need to visit Dakar. One of the most scenic views in West Africa, Ile de Goree, is the former slave port not far from Dakar. It is reminiscent of Capetown's Robben Island or San Francisco's Alcatraz but the residents of Goree Island never returned. Travel north up the coast and you can visit St. Louis, the old colonial town with beautiful architecture.

Senegalese food is the best in West Africa. The staple dish is Yassa, rice served with chicken, fish or meat. The Senegalese people will welcome you with warm arms. But, be prepared for the frustrations of traveling in the developing world. If you want a quiet vacation, Senegal is not for you. Senegal is loud, colorful and vibrant.
