Introduction to Barcelona Edit Section - Barcelona Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

Even before entering any buildings or making any purchases, Barcelona is already well worth the trip. It boasts a wealth of architectural eye candy, thanks in large part to Antoni Gaudí, a renowned turn-of-the-twentieth-century architect, whose work brightens the city with its verve and modern ingenuity, while ancient gothic cathedrals and cobblestone streets lend the city a more traditionally European flavor. It’s been a globetrotter’s must-do for years, particularly since 1992 when Barcelona hosted the Summer Olympics, but is growing even more so now with underground music festivals, the 2005-2006 Year of Food, Cuisine, and Gastronomy (described below), and – count them – five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Bars, restaurants, clubs, shops, elaborate parks and dozens of art museums dot the various neighborhoods with unfaltering regularity. Barcelona is flanked by rolling hills on one side and the sparkling Mediterranean on the other, it’s packed with tapas, sangria, and fresh seafood, and hosts three major universities and millions of tourists. This vibrant city is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most coveted vacation getaways.
