Every 4th grader worth his weight in Lunchables can tell you that "In fourteen hundred and ninety two Columbus sailed the ocean blue." That student may fail to mention that in the same year Ferdinand and Isabella completed their reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula and seized power from the Moors by recapturing the Alhambra, the last fortified stronghold of the Moors' Muslim empire. 1492 was certainly an annus mirabilis for Spain, just as it was a good year for the 'Reyes Catolicos,' they both consolidated and strengthened their power at home and were simultaneously handed a 'New World' of possibilities by their Italian sailing investment, Cristobal Colon.

The world famous Alhambra castle-complex reigns in Granada, a beautiful Spanish city located in the southern autonomous community of Andalusia. Granada is nestled in the foothills of the imposing Sierra Nevada mountains. Like the American version of the eponymous mountain range, the Spanish Sierras are snow covered, but unlike the American version, you will be less likely to spy a 'Keep Tahoe Blue' bumper sticker. Granada sits in a sweeping valley, the landscape is dry, the climate Mediterranean, and olive groves line the hillsides. The city offers a variety of restaurants, bars, and hotels, providing plenty of options for the busloads of tourists who come to see Spain's most famous castle.
