Introduction to La Rioja
Even if you haven't trodden the ripe fields of La Rioja, chances are, with any luck, you've tasted its terra. Last but not least in terms of total land area for an autonomous region, La Rioja take that limited soil and turns out some of the planet's best wines. Bold, rich noses, earthy flavors; La Rioja is Spain's white gloved slap to France and antiquated Bordeaux's of yesteryear. La Rioja is also bisected by the famed Camino de Santiago (Walk of Saint James) ((see Santiago de Compostela)).
If you are visiting northern Spain, and on a tight schedule, why not kill two birds with one stone, take a partial pilgrimage on the Camino whilst developing your pallet on a Rioja wine tour. Sample the excellent vintages between each pueblo ( town) and wash away your tannic troubles with the grace of the atoning pilgrim trail. La Rioja is just south of the Basque Country, and like the Basque Country, has seven components. Just as El Pais Vasco (Basque Country) is made up of seven provinces, so too does La Rioja produce seven phenomenal wine varietals, four red, and three white. Come to one of the world's most rustic and robust vineyards, bring a corkscrew and some of that excellent Basque cheese, and just remember not to plan any early morning outings. Simply put, La Rioja, is La Radical.
