For touristy trinkets, the narrow streets leading from Puerta del Sol to Plaza Mayor are best.

For shi-shi chic, try the designer booutiques along Calle Serrano. (Metro: Serrano)

For hip, try Calle Fuencarral and Calle Hortaleza, and the surrounding streets in Malasana and Chueca.

For mainstream fashion giants like H+M, Stradivarius, and Spanish favorite Zara (they've got their flagship here), head to Gran Via.

For everything else, head to French multimedia chain FNAC and the king of Spanish department stores El Corte Ingles, both between Plaza Callao and Puerta del Sol. Be warned though, that El Corte Ingles doesn't follow the Wal-Mart business plan, where bigger is cheaper...from the Spanish point of view, you ought to pay more for the convenience of finding everything in one place...and at Corte Ingles you do.
