| From the Air: Bajaras International Airport is a 20 min. metro ride from the city center on Line 8. Spain's first and largest airport, it is expanding--a new 4th terminal was finished in January 2006--and all international flights to Madrid come through here. (902 353 570, www.aena.es)
On the Road: National bus service in Spain is generally very good, and cheaper and most often quicker than railway transportation. International buses will come to Estación Sur, C/Mendez Álvaro, 83 (www.estaciondeautobuses.com, 914 684 200), while many buses coming to Madrid from within Spain will come to the station at Avenida de América (www.continentalauto.com). On the Rails: RENFE, the Spanish national railroad, has two main stations in Madrid: Estación de Chamartín and Estación de Atocha (www.renfe.es). |
There is no reason to rent a car in Madrid, as the underground Metro and bus lines are more than adequate for the needs of any visitor. If you'll be in town for a few days, it is probably worth buying an abono (reduced-rate ticket) for 6.10euros and good for 10 trips on either the metro or buses. Otherwise, tickets will cost 1euro for each ride. In the metro it is a good idea to hold on to your ticket after passing through the gate, as proof of purchase. (www.metromadrid.es, 902 44 44)
Night buses (named "Buho" or "owl" buses) run from midnight-5am from Pl. de Cibeles across Madrid, and 24 hour yellow taxis are also plentiful in the downtown area. Radio-Taxi: 914 475 180. |
