Santander, Spain, has a lot going for it, even beyond simple alliteration. Originally a Roman settlement, its first (and less poetic moniker) was Portus Victoriae Iuliobrigensium. A series of names followed, and with the purported 3rd C. arrival of (Saint Emeterio) a canonized martyr's cabeza at the local cathedral saw the unwieldy Latin name change to Sancti Emetheril. Next the city was known as San Ender and finally, the flowing, lyrical, Sant Ander, Spain. Etymological quests of discovery aside, Santander is a modern port city, sandwiched between Asturias to the west and Basque Country to the east; Santander is the capital of Cantabria, and is home to over a third of the state's inhabitants. Visitors often reach the city via discount airline from London; Santander is a hub for northern Spain's air travel, servicing both bull running Pamplonian pilgrims and San Sebastian sangria enthusiasts. Before leaving town in search of your inner Hemingway, wander around the 13th C. cathedral, stroll through the gardens of Pereda, and bounce around the aristocratic homes of Pombo square, centered around the Real Club de Regatas (Royal Regatta Club) a nod to the city's influential harbor and historical trading point during the 'Age of Discovery' and the lucrative mercantilistic trade that blossomed in the terra nova. Finish a morning of busy-bodied bi-pedalism by lounging around in the surf and sand of the golden beaches of El Sardinero.
