Introduction to Toledo Edit Section - Toledo Travel Guide - Hotels & Restaurants

The cold, deadly rasp of Spanish steel.  Narrow, shadowy corridors.  Silver crosses and murals of monstrous oversized men with elongated features -- Toledo is a time-travel treat.  Located like a bullseye in the dead center of Spain, Toledo's Spanishness radiates outwards like an ole' epicenter.  Just 70 clicks south of Madrid, this fantastically preserved Medieval city retains much of its knightly charm.  The capital of the imaginatively named, Toledo province, and a designated UNESCO world heritage site in Castile-La Mancha, you can almost imagine Cervantes's Don Quixote, trotting with his chain mail creaking in a lilting rhythm towards the city's imposing walls.  Cervantes wrote glowingly of Toledo, describing the walled mountainous city as,"rocky gravity, the glory of Spain, and light of her cities."  A historical hub of activity, Toledo hosted the Visigoth's council of 633, wherein administrative concerns over Hispania and Gaul were discussed, unlike contemporary "Goth Talk" where subjects include Hot Topic mall openings and tragio-dramatic chats between Cerce Nightshade and Azrael Abyss.

Long seen as an example of peaceful coetaneousness, Toledo predated Manhattan as an example of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communal coexistence.  While in town, wander the labyrinth stone streets, buy a Spanish sword from the famed medieval forges, and observe history in the old Roman fortification, the Alcazar.  Spend some time with El Greco, a famous painter that lived and worked in Toledo, his mark left inside many famous churches and museums. The city is a remarkable step into Spanish history plus, after visiting, you'll have an entirely new appreciation for Robin's paroxysm "Holy Toledo Batman!"  Quick!  Grab your passport, and your utility belt, and head for La Mancha.
