Introduction to Lund
Lund is a vivacious university town situated in Skåne (Scania), the southernmost province of Sweden. Characterized by winding, cobblestone streets framed by colorful, small, half-timber houses, Lund is visually reminiscent of other former trading towns scattered throughout northern Europe. The town is absolutely dominated by the university, which was established in 1666, a short eight years after Skåne was ceded to Sweden by Denmark. Before becoming a university town, though, Lund was defined by its religious function; in 1103, Lund became the seat of the archbishop of Scandinavia, and the construction of the city's grand cathedral began shortly thereafter.
Today, Lund is known more for its vibrant student culture than anything else. The student and town nightlife is conspicuously separate, though; student-exclusive "nations" are frequented instead of city bars, which effectively ensures that students and the rest of the city population don't mix.
