Introduction to Bern
Bern is a stunning, charming, and comfortably appointed mountain village in the bend of the river Aare. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with all manner of shops, restaurants, inns, and bars. A modern place with a well worn and old town feel makes this 500 year old city a treat to visit. With a modest population of around 130,000 inhabitants, Bern maintains the luxury amenities usually afforded to larger locales. Spend a day on foot, meander along the looping curves of the river bend past steeply gabled houses, climb stares for wooded views of Alpine horizons, and throw a franc into one of the gurgling old fountains in the medieval section, a dedicated UNESCO site. Bern is small, but relaxing, and like everything else in Switzerland, clean, efficient, and packed with perfection.
