The north of Thailand is less touristy, more trekky.  While you may see some camera-toting foreigners in the old city of Chiang Mai (capital of the north), the city's surroundings are largely untouched by tourism.  Mountains, waterfalls, rivers, streams, hill tribes that have little contact with the outside world – all these things are easily available anywhere throughout the north.

The northeast (Isan) is the least traveled, and the most authentic.  It’s a poor part of the country, but fascinating – many people from neighboring countries have migrated to Isan, and the mix of cultures is fascinating.  You won’t go here for luxury, but you certainly should if you want a deeper experience of the people of Thailand.

To the south, the mainland is also quite poor – and occasionally dangerous.  The south of Thailand is the only part of country with a Muslim majority, and there has been some terrorist activity recently.  So far there hasn’t been a large loss of life – but plenty of property damage. Bombs do go off occasionally.

The islands are very peaceful by comparison.  This is where the young tourists go to relax and be pampered, enjoy the natural beauty, and party the night away.  You won’t find many locals, but you will find one of the best places to enjoy water sports in the world, as well as one of the cheapest.  Accommodations can also be quite cheap, with personal bungalows starting at 150 or 200 baht.  If you want to splurge, that won't be a problem either, and prices will still compare favorably to beach resorts elsewhere in the world.
