The Night Bazaar is the star here.  Running between the old wall and the Ping River, it encompasses a number of streets.  Food stands abound, there’s leg massages on the streets for the road weary, and, of course, the crafts.
They run the gamut from tourist junk to legitimate art (or, at the very least, authentic work of true villagers, some of whom roam the streets selling their wares).  T-shirts and statues, bamboo lamps and knock-off watches.  Clothing of every stripe.  Jewelry for every taste.  Fast food for the culture-shocked.  The night bazaar in many ways is the heart of Chiang Mai, or at least the heart of the tourist trade.  No matter who you are, you’ll probably see something you want.
After that, like all good Thai cities, Chiang Mai abounds with local markets that sell household goods, food, and various knick-knacks.  On the inner border of the southern moat surrounding the old city is a large market dedicated to foods that is particularly interesting.
And, of course, there are malls.  The airport actually has some of the best retail shopping in the city, but the malls in the north and west of the city are worth a visit just for the experience.  I don’t want to give too much away, but don’t wear anything wide, and prepare for a few shocks.
